How 2802 Happened.
Why 2802?
People usually expect a clever story.
I wish I had one.
2802 is simply my birthday.
The interesting part was never the number.
It was everything that slowly gathered around it.
Wine.
Travel.
Technology.
Conversations.
One question that refused to leave me alone.
What makes one person notice what another walks past?
I Thought I Was Studying Wine
I spent years studying wine.
Somewhere along the way I realized I wasn’t studying wine at all.
I was studying judgment.
Memory.
Conversation.
Desire.
Identity.
Wine simply happened to be the laboratory.
The longer I worked with wine, the less interested I became in wine.
People were always far more complicated.
I’ve forgotten many bottles.
I’ve never forgotten the conversations that mattered.
A remarkable conversation can change the way you see the world.
That’s why 2802Club slowly grew beyond wine.
Not away from it.
Beyond it.
Places Don’t Teach. They Remove Noise.
I don’t collect countries.
I collect perspectives.
Some places disappear the moment you leave.
Others quietly become part of how you think.
Lake Como taught me that elegance never needs to announce itself.
Tuscany taught me patience.
Napa convinced me that tradition and innovation are perfectly capable of sharing the same table.
The deserts of Namibia and Nevada stripped away every distraction until only the important questions remained.
Standing beneath giant sequoias, I was reminded that most things don’t need to happen as quickly as we imagine.
Spain expanded my idea of home.
Russia reminds me that some roots never ask for permission to stay with you.
Every place leaves behind a different way of seeing.
I still borrow those perspectives every time I write.
People often ask what 2802Club is about.
Wine?
Artificial intelligence?
Travel?
Culture?
Yes.
And no.
Those are simply different windows looking into the same house.
The house is curiosity.
The Dog Waiting in Italy
There is a Doberman waiting for me in Italy.
Officially, he’s my son’s dog.
Fortunately, dogs don’t care much for official arrangements.
We have an understanding.
I bring the walks.
He reminds me what paying attention looks like.
Oddly enough, that’s where some of my best ideas appear.
Walking around Lake Como.
Without a deadline.
Without an agenda.
Just paying attention.

I’m still learning that lesson.
That’s why I keep writing.
Not to explain the world.
Just to notice it a little more carefully.
